To my America,
The LetterOh America, your
beauty clings on. Your fields spread wide. Your skies, grand and blue. Your
towering mountains. Your crystal clear rivers. Surely there is poetry which
remains. But still you weep. Why?
How I long to hold you, so you might ease your suffering for a time. I
would take such good care of your worries. My sweet, give to me your
burdens. Let me mend your misfortunes. Allow me to cherish a kiss. Please
let me ease your soul.
But I think your soul may be too far-gone. Is it? Do you still have
enough left for me to mend? Oh my country, my country, my eternal pride,
your soul has shriveled and died. But why don't you fix it? Why don't you
take charge? Oh yes. I remember. Your not like us. You can't fix your own
soul, can you? That's right. That's right, it is us…we…the people who are
your soul. Oh my kingdom, my realm, what can we do?
I have an answer, I think. I will attempt it. I'll try. What if I…What if
I mended myself? What if I looked inward and built from my basest fears on
out? What if I loved you true? What if I were brave, what if I fought for
you again? If I listened to your past would your burden be eased? If I
listened so deep to your sorrows, would your heart be lighter in the morn? I
believe so well that things shall bloom for you. I do not wish to see you
die. I love you so.
But I am not enough, am I? I'm sorry.
You need more, don't you? What if your people, your soul, what if they
won't face themselves again? What if they cannot be strong? Oh, my love, I
fear for your life.
I am hanging on for you. I believe. I will not sacrifice your soul.
They will hang me today. They say it is treason. Maybe it is treason,
towards their America, but not towards my America. How could I betray you?
You know it is not true. I did all that I could. I loved all that I could. I
tried. Oh, my darling, I tried. But, alas, I failed. And so, to the gallows
for me. But I, like you, will die with love in my heart. I will die as full
as I can. Overflowing with love. Though they have power over my body this
day, they can never touch my soul. They can never touch our soul. They will
never kill our love.
Hold your grip, my America. Hold it. Don't stop loving them. Keep your
shores open. Keep your heart pure. There will always be those who are brave.
There will always be those who are free. One day, I pray, there will be
enough to save you. Yes, fight on. It shall come. Your day of strength. Your
salvation. There will be peace within again. Soon you shall weep no more.
My love, fight on. Please, fight on.
